For some time have I been working on a solution to share and distribute my contacts between the Macs at work. LDAP has seemed like a good solution, however rather complex to get going with it (see AddressBookXLDAP). After receiving some suggestions from the community I developed Address Book Server, which lets you synchronise your contacts between your Macs. It does not require a online subscription as you can host your own server on either Tiger or Leopard.
After installing the server and client packages you can discover your local Address Book Server via Bonjour. The enterprise edition even provides web access which is also published via Bonjour. So there is really very little to configure. Then there is the selection of synchronisation modes. Do you want to sync your entire Address Book, or a selection of contacts part of a particular group. Either option is supported.
Once contacts are synchronised with the server, they can be accessed via the friendly web interface on the Enterprise Edition, or synchronised down to another Mac.
A native iPhone client is currently in development and should be available on he AppStore soon.
The web site for the Address Book Server project is http://www.addressbookserver.com
PS : I hope this doens't sound too much like marketing, just a lot of my users have commented that this is the solution they have been looking for, and I should publish it more.
