Hi,

Forgive me if this is an obvious question but I'm new to macs and not au fait with networking and all that stuff.

I am in the UK and have a home connection with O2 - which came with a preconfigured wireless modem. I'm wondering whether it's possible to connect an external HDD to that modem via ethernet to use as a shared drive.

I know about Time Capsule but it's a bit expensive and I don't really need all of its functions, so I am looking for a cheaper option that allows me to share files and backup (computers at home are 2 Macs and a Linux Eee PC - whether or not the Eee PC can access the shared drive is not that important however).

Would Airport Express do something like that for me? Or is Time Capsule a better option in that case, since I'd have to buy airport express and a HDD?

If I do get Time Capsule:
1. Is it possible to use Time machine from both my macs?
2. Is it possible to use part of the drive as Time machine but then also have a partition for shared files (photos, movies etc)?

Thanks for your help and apologies for my ignorance!! I'm very confused.
