Share FCP Storage? Desktop and Laptop?

Anyway to share the internal storage of my Mac Pro with my Macbook Pro besides having a huge SAN server setup in my house?

I have all my files setup on my Mac Pro internal drives, but I like my room mate to be able to access the files and do graphics and sound stuff.

Would gigabyte ethernet be fast enough? What about firewire 800?

I don't have thunderbolt on either machine.

Is this possible? Or do I have to move files over slowly to his hard drive?

I move files between my iMac and MBP via WiFi from the finder ("connect as" function). For media files I'd rather suggest Ethernet.
