and friend and myself swap about 10gb of files for work every week. we use drop box but that gets annoying since we only have 1gb of storage. So the question is do we have a better way to do this? Iv considered FTP but its not as secure I'm told?

I do have a freenas test box i can use if its possible.

You could each install BitTorrent Sync (free), each set it up to the folder where your shared data will be and use a shared key (one of you sets up first, then sends the key to the other). When both machines are online it will keep the two folders in sync.

Strengths:
No data is stored in any cloud, only on your machines (might be important to you).
Space is only limited by the storage you give it on each machine
Free

Weakness
Both machines have to be online to sync between them

Equally for that volume you could use the free allocation with Box, Copy or Google Drive...each of those have data on their cloud so your machines won't have to be online together.
