So, two laptops involved here..

One has wireless access, the other does not (long story)...

I've got an ethernet cable and i thought i'd share my internet connection through 'sharing' under network preferences, to allow the windows 7 computer to get online as well.

Problem - the windows laptop cannot connect to the internet. I've managed to do this before with no problems when i was sharing a USB 3G dongle's connection over wifi - any ideas?

MBPro's ip address is showing as a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx address, and so is the Win7 laptop..

On the Mac:

System Preferences.../Sharing

Select "Internet Sharing"

Under "Share you connection from:" select "Airport"

Under "To computers using:" select "Ethernet"

Connect the two machines with the wire

Check the checkbox next to "Internet Sharing"

Click "Start"

Wait a sec for windows to grab an IP address from your Mac.

Yeah this is what is not working...

It could be that the PC isn't grabbing the address. If memory serves, the IP should be 10.0.1.x

It may be time to review what your PC's wireless settings are.

Question, are you using a standard Ethernet cable? Meaning one that is NOT a crossover?

Did you try manually setting the TCP/IP settings on the windows laptop? That's how I used to connect an xbox to the wifi in my house.

on mac, the IP address on the ethernet controller is 169.254.119.94 and the subnet is 255.255.0.0

on the windows computer, the ip address is 169.254.151.165 and the subnet is 255.255.0.0

using standard ethernet cable (my understanding is the mac has an auto-sensing port), and i need a bit of help with manual configuration if that's what i'm getting wrong. my wireless ip address is a 10.xxx address (uni wireless)

Was this problem resolved?

I have the same problem with Windows 7. Mac settings are fine. I am using a crossover ethernet cable.

There are a lot of tutorials on how to configure the Mac/PC when using the Mac as a wireless internet access point. However, I have yet to find a tutorial on how to connect a Windows 7 PC to a Mac via ethernet when the Mac accesses its internet from a wireless router (I use DSL wireless modem and connect to my Mac via Airport).

Thanks, LeRoy
