¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I have a 4G dongle with my Macbook and know how to share the 4G connection over wifi.

What I am wondering is if there is a way to keep the sharing enabled when the computer's lid is closed while the computer runs on battery?

The computer will continue the sharing with the lid closed when on mains power but always cuts the sharing if the lid is closed while running off the battery.

Is the only alternative to use something like Caffeine? Is there any Terminal command that might do the trick?

Thank you in advance
Philip

Try System Preferences > Energy Saver > Battery and check Enable Power Nap while on battery power. Not sure if it will work but it might help.
