shared dvd/cd

I'm not sure if this is a OSX (10.11.6 Beta) issue, or a hardware issue (mbp 13" mid-09). I'm trying to use shared dvd/cd to install software. The mbp has a disk doubler added, the cd drive removed and replaced with the original hard drive. I understand shared drive will not be indicated is the current system has an optical drive - which it did, but doesn't now. I've looked at the hardware devices and not optical drive is shown. I've tried from three different shared drives and none show up in local finder sidebar - which has DVD checked in sidebar. Thoughts?
