I’m super excited about shared library because it means o can stop using Google photos to keep a single library for all photos my wife and I take.

Problem is even though I set the shared library to share all between both of us, the little shared library toggle in each of our camera apps keeps turning itself off, meaning some photos get taken and don’t get shared defeating the purpose. Anyone encounter this or know of a fix?

Same here. I tried Camera > Preserve Settings > Creative Controls (I think the Shared Library toggle sits with these) and that seems to work sometimes but not always. I wish Apple would include an option to share all photos for people in our situation (before 16.1, her phone was under my Apple ID solely to share the same Photos Library and now she can finally have it under her Apple ID if we can get this to work!).

Another broken toggle in iOS. Sheesh. I can name a couple others that do this But I’ve come across many more. The two that annoy me most are the alarm toggles for the HomePods and my kids’ Screen Time settings. Just randomly turn off.

Yes having same issue. I'm very afraid though that this is NOT a bug. I think they designed this stupid feature to NOT work as most of us would like it to. If you carefully read the camera settings for automatically sharing, it looks like they only figured you'd want to share the photos if you're either: A: At home, or B: near your wife/husband physically. otherwise it doesn't appear to work. My wife goes to a girl scout thing, snaps pics, comes home, they're NOT in our shared library. Why? She's not at home, and not near me.

This is a massive feature miss.

I think I have solved it. I was having the same problem with the Shared Library toggle turning off by itself in both my and my wife’s phone but I believe I have found a fix.

In camera setting in iPhone under Shared Library change the settings from Share Automatically to Share Manual. (It seems as though automatic will only share when you’re at home or near each others phone). When this setting is set to automatic it looks as though it will only respect your selection of turning on the toggle to the on position for the camera only for that session. Once you exit the camera if you are not home or near the other persons phone, it turns the toggle off. However, once you set it to manual it will respect the toggle setting in the camera app.

Once you have changed the setting to manual, launch the camera app and toggle on the Shared Library icon. It has been two days since I made this change and so far my Shared Library toggle has remained on.

If this is indeed the way it was intended, then 'automatic' and 'manual' were very poor choices of words to use for the options. Does this work with or without Camera > Preserve Settings > Creative Controls toggled on?

I agree the wording is definitely not intuitive. I haven't played around with Preserve Settings but my guess is this will not have any bearings on this issue.

Thanks, I'm giving it a shot as well. I'm noticing, though, that any photos I save (like ones I get by text or email that I want to save to my photo library) are not automatically included. The options should be something like:

- All photos (taken by camera and saved)
- All camera
- Same location
- Manual

Holy crap. I am going to try this, but I will need to take a couple trips away from the house and stuff and see if it sticks. Strange that the setting would not be in the preserve settings menu under camera though. Like the way live photos is.
