My wife and I plan on sharing a personal laptop to keep our work laptops work only. I know we should really just get 2 laptops but cost is a concern.
I had a 2008 unibody mbp which was laggy/slow but did what I wanted until someone spilled water on it this weekend. We currently have 2 iPhones, 2 tablets and an i3 Sandybridge hackintosh htpc with tons of storage for media so we're not totally computerless. "Parallels" assumes Windows 7.
My primary use:
- Parallels + ie + proprietary software for signing certain documents
- Parallels + Excel. I'm an excel power user but only need the ability to do light risk modelling. Heavy use of VBA macros but these don't seem too resource intensive.
- Parallels + Powerpoint
- Parallels + Word
- OSX web browsing
- OSX light programming (Python, possibly light Objective-C later)
- no weight/portability requirements
- love retina
Her primary use (all OSX):
- Web browsing
- Media viewing only
- iPhone/iPad sync
- Light word
- strong preference for light and portable but I'm not sure if we'll bother travelling with it since we both have work computers + tablets.
- she has a 2012 13" MBA and loves it but it's a work computer
Will a 13" MBA with an i7 be enough for me? I say i7 because an apple store rep mentioned it was worth it for the multiple threads on a 64 bit copy of windows but not sure if that's right since both i5 and i7 are dual core.
If not, should we look at a 13" rMBP or possibly the regular 13" MBP? I love the retina screen but don't need it bc I have it on other devices anyway. Should we just wait for the fall and possible new MBPs? Cost is flexible-ish for upgrades that make sense but with a strong preference towards cheaper overall.
