How do I require a password or some other authentication for a printer that is being shared? At home, I was behind a broadband router with a built-in firewall, but at college, it is a no-no to create private networks. Since I am assigned a public IP address, the shared printer is visible to virtually anyone (I've already printed to it from a different subnet).
My goal is to secure it so that only my iBook, iMac, and FreeBSD box can print to it. The contstraint is that I cannot use a router or hardware firewall to do so. Therefore, there needs to be some sort of software restriction.
I tried going to the web-based CUPS administration at http://localhost:631/, but it looks like logging into the administrative section is disabled by the OS.
I posed this question elsewhere, and still haven't had any takers. Any help is appreciated.
