Sharing Apps (newbie question)

Can two iPhones share paid apps from the same iTunes? Is there a number of devices an app can be used on? Does it matter if the app was downloaded directly to one of the phones first? Wife has the iPhone and expanding to the family plan this weekend (plus shipping time for the iP4).
