Sharing external drive

I was curious if i could use the same external hard drive that i use for my time machine backups also as a place to store my iPhoto library. My iPhoto size has become too large for my macbook pro and i would like to gain some space back. I know that time machine already backs up my whole computer to the external whenever i plug it in, just wondering how to go about putting a folder just for my iPhoto library or something along those lines. Any suggestions or help is be greatly appreciated!
