Sharing Fat32 External Storage over network

I've read a few posts telling me how to get this to work, but I'm just not having any luck. I'm running 10.8.1 on two macbook pros in my house. One has a MEDIA external hard drive connected to it, it's enabled under sharing (though the option to share to someone is greyed out) and I just can't see it on my other mbp.

Anything I'm doing wrong? SMB is enabled too, if that matters.

Did you go to System Preferences->Sharing and click the 'option' key to add the accounts for the people you want to share with?

Plus the thread Secure file sharing Windows 7 with Leopard/Snow Leopard still holds a lot of tips you can still use in 10.8.
