Hey guys,

I'm selling an iPod classic on these classifieds that can only be accessed by people who either attend or work for my university. I got an email from someone who's interested, but he wants to know the serial number of my iPod Classic (80 gig). I initially gave him just the last 3 digits since I know that confirms that it's a classic, but he said he needed the whole number string to check if my model was afflicted by some alleged bug some of the earlier batches had.

I've already told him that I'd only give him the part of the number string that would indicate the batch and not the whole number. I also said I'd be happy to give him the model number.

Am I being overly paranoid? The guy has a university email address just like me, which I know doesn't inherently make him trustworthy, but at least provides an easier way to track him. If need be, do I run any real risk by giving him the whole number?

Thanks

Give him the serial number. Honestly, I would not buy anything from someone who is so unwilling to let me know the serial number. He can't derive any personal information from it, only information about the model and maybe whether it is stolen or legit. I never had a seller who was unwilling to give serial numbers, and while you are suspicious of him, he will be suspicious of you if you don't do so.
