A friend with iphone 12 pro had an amazing photo with clouds lit by the sun. but when he airdropped the photo to me the photo looked completely different. I have iphone X.

Now I know about recording in 10bit dolby and sharing with friends they need to have compatible display but for photos?! Even when he uploads photo on website and looks on his own phone in safari it gets dull in the same way.

Anyone who experienced this? Ios 14.2, heic , no raw, stock camera app

Are you yourself on iOS 14.2? And as per previous question is it the full res image?

The only difference in the iPhone X is that it has a lower Peak brightness, and it’s not an XDR display but I doubt that even makes a difference.

Bumping this. I've seen this across the 12 line. Similar photo - clouds in the background with sun behind them. Crazy cool looking contrast/highlights on the phone. But as soon as the photo goes to my TV (via Airplay) or my computer screen, it's still a great looking photo, but it's like the exposure of the entire thing evens out significantly. I've made sure to compare the original file on both the phone and on my computer as well, same result. It's very odd.

I will say, unlike the OP, when I look at the same photo synced to my 11 Pro, it looks the same as the 12. But once it gets off the phone, the difference is incredible. Again, both good photos. But completely different exposure and dynamic range.

What gives? It's almost like the photo viewer is auto enhancing the photos with higher contrast and dynamic range than what it was originally.

Edit: Two other findings just now. #1 - Same results on my daughter's iPhone 8 (non-OLED). #2 - From the photo, if I click the share button, when it raises to give you the options for sending, the crazy "enhancement" goes away. So that seems to point to the photo viewer just deciding to make it have "pop" on its own...
