If you look at the attached screenshot you'll see my laptop is called MBP15 but down below to access it via AFP it says afp://snt-602.snowtr.local/. this computer hasn't been on our network in a very long time...things I've done include

Checks our DNS/DHCP server to make sure no references to the wrong server exist...they don't.
Flushed the MBP15 client DNS cache and rebooted
Turned off AFP and back on with same results?

What gives?

What's in /etc/hosts ?

Have you tried connecting to the server using the posted .local address?
If it works, it suggests mDNS (Rendezvous) is resolving the name.

I just checked the HOSTS file based on your suggestion...there is nothing there custom if that is what you are asking. Worth noting when I brought up terminal it also stated the wrong name for my macbook pro stating the same SNT-602 (see screenshot).

The issue in not connecting the machine with the wrong reference (server) but that it's listed improperly.

I have no clue what mDNS is, please elaborate how that plays into this. My macbook pro is/should be using DNS from our DNS server
