Shazam, the service designed to listen to music and identify lyrics, today updated its iOS app with support for iOS 11 and watchOS 4.

The update includes an entirely revamped version of the Shazam Apple Watch app, with a new look and feel and some impressive speed improvements.

Shazam for Apple Watch is able to identify songs much more quickly, and there's a new more convenient feature that lets users set Shazam to listen and then lower their wrists. When the song is identified, Shazam offers up a little haptic tap.

As MacStories points out, on one of the new Apple Watch Series 3 models, Shazam was able to identify music that was playing in just a few seconds. Shazam is also able to operate entirely over LTE on the new devices when an iPhone isn't available.

The new app also supports listening to previews of song matches directly on the Apple Watch, with the interface displaying list of the last handful of songs that were identified.

Shazam can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

This is great... the last time I heard about Shazam, it didn't even utilise the Watch's microphone!

People still use shazam? Doesn’t Siri identify songs?
Siri name that tune only works on the iPhone - this is useful if you don't have your phone (especially in the case of LTE)

I honestly never use Shazam but it's an app I will always keep installed just in case I need it.

Can't wait to try this. Wanted the old Shazam watch app to work, but it was just a remote control.

Shazam worked great for me earlier today. I didn't realize it was non functional in the past until reading these comments. I've only had an AW for two days now.

The watch itself feels a bit half baked overall. It also feels like it will more or less replace my iPhone for most things in about three years, much like my iPhone replaced my MacBook for most things a few years ago.

The new app is great. It's fast and it does work without a phone. You can even listen to the preview on the watch.

Good job

Siri is embarrassing, would rather be able to identify songs without saying "Hey Siri what song is this?"
Exactly. I'm sure plenty of people 'still' use Shazam

This is just one of the many things that Siri is hopeless at.

I guess I'll try the updated app. The first one on the watch was 100% unreliable and never worked for me once. Kind of embarrassing when friends are around and you're trying to use the latest and greatest technology only for it to fail.

Edit: It worked. Not so well the first time but the second test worked within a few seconds of listening to the song. This was just with iTunes though, not sure how reliable it will be in a loud bar or restaurant.

Launching Shazam from the watch would take too long (I always need it right at the end of the song) even on faster watches you've still got to find the app to open it. I use the Shazam widget on my phone, it's the fastest way I've found of opening it.

Super late to this party, but I wanted to chime in to give props to Shazam. As a music enthusiast, this is by far my most used app over the last 2 years. I go to a different live music event every other weekend, including several electronic music festivals where lots of just recently music is debuted.

The Shazam app is right on my watch face and I'd be quite sad to see the functionality go away.
