shift key giving icons(€) on yosemite

I have this new problem on yosemite that I can't fix. If I use the left shift key on my macbook air it gives icons. it is extremely annoying.

for instance capital f comes out as Ï.

i checked my keyboard and nothing has changed. the right shift key works perfectly.
