problem resolved itself about a week after thorough cleaning...

That's going to be a bad keyboard, which on the unibody machines is the whole top case. Hopefully, you're in warrant and it wasn't a spill (though it probably was).

didn't replace keyboard, trackpad started to act up, cleaned everything and tightened screw, both resolved. thanks for replying!
