Before COVID, if you ship to home, they send you a box for your old phone to return it. If you ship to store they take it back on the spot after your new phone is set up. If you ship to home, you can’t return the old one to the store, has to be via mail in.

I’ve always preferred to ship to store as I don’t have to sit around waiting to sign for FedEx at home. My son had his 12 Pro shipped to store last week and they would not let him set it up or take his trade. He is still in limbo on what to do with the old phone. Still waiting for a box or something. They did give him a trade value toward the new phone, so you would think they would want the trade.

So sorry for the long post, but what is your experience returning the old phone when you ship to store?

I’ve never done ship to store but for my 12 Pro, I didn’t get any sort of box to return my old phone. I had to print the return label from the website and I went ahead and reused the box the new phone came in and some bubble wrap I had laying around the house.

Almost positive with my wife’s XR last year that I got separate packaging for the trade in.

With in-store pick up, normally you would trade in the phone and you hand the phone over to them. However, some stores are epress pick up only with just the check in window. So I asked them how that would work with trade ins or those who are on iUP. They told me normally they prefer that for iUP it's the phone you are trading is all erased and everything before hand so that they can process smoothly (recommended back up). They said otherwise they will give you a box for you to mail it. Which I haven't done before.

Thanks, exactly my son's experience except they did not give him a box and he has received no correspondence or direction on how to return it.

I am just trying to decide what to do in terms of delivery to home or store. Ideally I like store pick-up because it used to be a completed transaction on the spot, but with COVID, seems to not be consistent, they definitely don't want you there very long and erasing your phone.

Yea with this COVID and with some Apple stores converting to Express pick up only, I would say go with home delivery. For Fedex, I have no issues requesting a hold for pick up at my nearest Fedex Ship and Print Center, despite that it has restrictions. Same goes for UPS, I always request a hold for pick up at my nearest UPS CC. And in both cases, it does not delay the pick up date. This way I don't have to worry about when they will be coming to my house.

I will check this out and I would prefer to pick up at a UPS or FedEx store, but from my experience this adds a day.

For UPS, you will want to do UPS CC, this will not add a day and I have done this every time and not once has it been delayed. If you did the UPS Store Access Point, that may add a day because it will still need to go on the vehicle and will do it's routine first and then eventually be dropped of at the UPS Store and by that time, the store may even be closed. But I never had issues with the UPS Store either as I was able to pick it up on the same day.

As for Fedex ship and print store, this never added a day for me and I was able to pick up my apple produced on the day of it was promised to deliver.

Thank you. Do you know if Apple is using UPS or FedEx for 12 deployment?

I see that the regular 12 delivers the next day. So that will likely be on Fedex or UPS as it's already in the warehouse, it depends tho. I think around this time when they are busy, they use both. IMO, I always prefer Fedex oppose to UPS but that's me.

IF you are talking about Mini and the 12 Pro Max, those will come from China and therefore will be done via UPS.

Thanks, yes I am ordering the Pro Max Friday morning. I always ship to store so I don't have to sit around waiting, but my son's experience with his old phone still in hand in limbo with no instructions on what to do with it have me concerned. I know for a fact that ship to home comes with a label or a box or both. I am going to call the actual Apple Store I want to ship to and see how they are handling this.

Both are the same. Either way you get a return box or bag and label. It will come in the mail.

I just called the store I would ship to for pick up at store and they said they are taking trade-ins even on launch day.
