As the holidays approach, supplies of the Retina iMac appear to be improving somewhat, and as of this week, shipping estimates for both standard and custom Retina iMac configurations have improved to 1 to 2 weeks in the United States (via MacGeneration). Shipping estimates have also improved to 1 to 2 weeks in many other countries, but custom configurations may carry higher shipping times outside of the United States.

Retina iMac stock has been significantly constrained since the machine launched on October 16, slipping to 3 to 5 days shortly after release then moving to 7 to 10 days before dropping to 3 to 4 weeks in mid-November.

The base Retina iMac, with a 3.5GHz processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 1TB fusion drive is in stock at many retail Apple Stores around the country and can be picked up same day, but when ordered from the online store, it ships in 1 to 2 weeks like all custom configurations. With the newly improved shipping estimates, Retina iMacs ordered today will arrive well ahead of the Christmas holiday.

Equipped with a 5120 x 2880 "5K" Retina screen, Apple's newest iMac has received largely positive reviews for its impressive display, and configured with a 4.0GHz processor and 32GB of RAM, the higher-end Retina iMac models are able to outperform the low-end Mac Pro.

The people shown on the screens in Apple advertisements, such as the one on the 27" screen image above, seem to engage in such fun activities.

I loves me some Retina iMac!

Warning: After using a Retina iMac you may find yourself randomly browsing for 4K monitors. My 1080 2nd & 3rd displays are offensive to my eyes now.

If I wanted two displays, could I use two 5K macs together as two connected displays such as plugging in a iMac to a Thunderbolt Display?

I pick up mine in 19 days!

Maxed out, except for the memory. I'll get that and save myself $300.

Go AAPL! (it's paying for it, kind of a snake devouring itself thingy...)

The guy in the middle is thinking, "I shouldn't have worn my Speedo for this."

No. Apple does not allow the 5K iMac to be a target display like the previous 27" models. You can hook a 4K monitor up to it, but you can't use a second iMac connected to it.

No. You could run them separate OSes, with, eg, Safari on one and Lightroom on another but there would not be any direct file sharing or copy and paste (though for both, solutions can be found, eg, via Dropbox or applications that synchronise copy and paste).

New Retina iMac: So detailed, you'll never have to leave the house again.

Too bad this is the only new Mac they have for Christmas. The whole Mac product line looks outdated, except perhaps the 5k iMac. If there was something interesting, I'd buy it now, but it seems I'll have to wait more (and I've been waiting for over 2 years now).

Mine was finally delivered two days ago, and it's an absolutely gorgeous machine. I use it for a mix of work (software development), casual media consumption, and gaming (Civ VI, Elite: Dangerous), and it's a joy to use in all cases.

Definitely one of Apple's most exciting and impressive products!

I'm so jealous. I'm sitting here still wondering if I should just get the 21.5 which is HD. After reading everyone's comment, I want the 5K screen. I'm afraid to go to the Apple Store to look because I might just end up getting it! I bet the display is absolutely stunning! I have a rMBP so just imagining it on a larger screen would be fantastic!

How about more juicy rumors about the next iMac. Mine freezes daily and I need a new one (Apple genius says I need a new logic board and video card). But I'd like to avoid 2 year old processor technology.

It seems to me that processor technology isn't advancing as fast as it used to. My (yet to arrive) retina iMac, with the i7, replaces a 5 year old (1st generation) 27" i7 iMac. It's 85% faster in those 5 years. On the other hand, the new iMac is only 20% faster than the top end 2012 iMac, which is hardly noticeable in real life use.

New Mac minis, but they are lesser than the ones they replaced so easily forgotten. :)

You can cancel your order.

My arrival date just moved forward 3 days!

Good point! As the poster put, I'll put that in the 'W' column for you.

LOL you win that argument. Glad to hear your riMac is on the way.

Yeah, I gave him/her the win on that one.
