Shld i use iphone in europe? what costs less?

we're going to france and switzerland for 3 weeks. i heard AT&T rates are higher than renting a phone from cellular abroad. any thoughts?
can i use the new iphone skype app in europe? i don't know much about skype.
I expect to get calls from my office in the US; will also make a few local european calls.
 
I recommend to unlock your iPhone and take a local prepaid plan. After your trip you can restore your iPhone to original state.
