Shooting in HD working on FCP6

Hello
Is there a standard set for shooting on HD on my JVC HD101 and to capture on FCS6. I was experimenting the other day but no matter what I did, my iMac with final cut studio didn't seem to lock in nor recognize my device. What settings should I choose on FCS6 and my camcorder.
Any help would be fantastic.
