Apple today announced the upcoming launch of "Greatness Code," a new short-form sports docuseries that will feature stories from athletes like LeBron James, Tom Brady, Shaun White, Usain Bolt, and more.

"Greatness Code" was co-produced by Uninterrupted and Religion of Sports, and was directed by Gotham Chopra. The first season will feature seven mini episodes, each examining a pivotal moment that defined an athlete's career. Episodes feature the following athletes:
  • Four-time NBA MVP, three-time NBA champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist LeBron James
  • Six-time Super Bowl champion and four-time Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady
  • Olympic gold medalist and co-captain of the US Women's National Soccer Team Alex Morgan
  • Record-holding Olympic gold medalist snowboarder Shaun White
  • World's fastest man and eight-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt
  • Five-time Olympic gold medalist and 15-time world champion swimmer Katie Ledecky
  • 11-time world champion surfer Kelly Slater
"Greatness Code" is set to premiere exclusively on Apple TV+ on Friday, July 10. It will join other documentary-style content such as "Home," and "The Beastie Boys Story."

Apple TV+ provides original movies and TV shows for $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year, plus there's a free year of service for those who have recently purchased an Apple device. For those who don't qualify for the free year, Apple offers a one-week free trial. Check out our step-by-step instructions for getting up and running from various devices.

Anyone else feel like ATV+ is getting a LOT better here lately? I was lukewarm to it at best when it launched, but between this, the new Tom Hanks film, that new animated sitcom from the Bob's Burgers creators, etc, Apple is really getting out some compelling content imo
Apple is really going after it. Thought was going to be too late of entry but some good decisions so far. This series seems to be take on ESPN 30 for 30.

The funny thing is that you’re not the only one. I said it from the beginning... So many people are so quick to judge Apple an immediately ruled ATV+ out.

A few weeks and a few months go by and people start changing their tune. Like, I get Apple makes mistakes and is far from perfect, but did y’all really think this platform wouldn’t take off? Lol. They invested sooo much money into it and brought in so much talent.

At least some of you can admit that you were wrong, which is nice.

I like Apple diversifying its shows. This is the first sport-centric show on Apple TV+ and it sounds good. I wonder how long the "mini-sodes" will be though - I hope it's not 5 minutes like Fraggle Rock.

You took the words right out of my mouth!

I really enjoy ATV+, but I'm also not paying for it (included with AM student), so I might have a different opinion if it cost me $5/mo. It'll never have the same sub count as Disney+ or even Hulu. The ceiling for Apple TV+ is probably in the same critical and subscriber base of HBO Max, which is probably what Apple is going for.

I have no doubt that Apple will have a great catalogue but I think most people will view other companies as better alternatives from the size of their offering.
What I don't know is with these streaming wars, how does one choose which streaming service to go with once all of them have a large catalogue? Does one subscribe to all of them at different points in the year and binge watch and then cancel subscription and move on to the next streaming service and keep cycling through them?

That’s actually what a lot of consumers do. Netflix reported an uptick when the new season of Stranger Things premiered last year. With so many available now, and new services on the horizon (HBO Max, Peacock, etc.), That’s probably the smartest way to do it. Unless you or your family is watching content on all of these services at the same time...people save money by cycling through them.

That’s the great thing about these streaming services, you can cancel and re-subscribe at your own will depending on what content do you want to watch at any given time!

I mean I wasn’t writing it off from the start, that’s extremely presumptuous on your part... I just didn’t think their day one content was all that great, and it wasn’t. The Morning Show is the only one I can even remember at the moment, probably because it was the only really decent one at launch. The rest were stinkers. Like whatever that god awful Jason Momoa project was...yikes. I don’t think I could even finish the first episode.

When they have nowhere to go but up (pardon the pun)... They do seem to be killing it with the doc's though more than the cringeworthy scripted shows. Maybe this will turn out to be like how Apple Watch turned a corner when it focused on health. Apple could find its voice with inspiring docuseries. Steve was all about the humanities...

You make an excellent point. Of course Apple would turn it around with the kind of content that appeals to our emotions. Non-scripted stuff like you said, or scripted stuff that is accurately based on true stories. Most other platforms have been around long enough to have found their "thing", their niche in the market that no one else has filled and thus draws people to your service, and this could be exactly that for them.
