Beijing.
So here in Beijing, my international school is taking part in a short story competition. The competition is opened up to all international schools in china, and my mom, being the head of the english department decided to get us students to participate.

The competition has very few guidelines, in fact theres only one- it has to be related to the term "decision". So somewhere in the story there has to be some kind of decision. Now, i enjoy creative writing, but when its my idea, not when im given a topic to write about. I manage to come up with some rather intriguing plots like a fortune cookie that says the character must leave town and the sort, but i was just wondering if any of you knew of any, or can think of any cool plots. i wont be copying, just need some inspiration, as i love writing, and submitting a piece is always fun to see if you win in the end.

im not doing it to win, im doing it for the writing. ALTHOUGH, the prizes are pretty sweet, with increments from 100 RMB to 3000 RMB, as well as an iPad:eek: haha,

best regards,

AJ--

P.S. mom said its okay if i ask (as in not cheating) as long as i dont copy directly;)
P.P.S. an i refer to mom rather childishly, im 14, and my mother works at my school, and is taking care of submitting entries for the competition. this is why i referred to her in the post:D

What about something really important in your life, like buying a house, but it has a dodgy past or something, that could be the twist perhaps.

Young Marco is hating his life. Adorning the cuts and bruises of yet another schoolyard fight, he walks with his head down and his mind racing. No one cares about him and he thinks about running away to join the circus.

Just then, a pterodactyl approaches him and asks if he could buy some salami for him. The pterodactyl is short on cash and promises he'll make it worth his while. With nothing else happening in his life, Marco decides to take a chance.

He goes into the back of a near grocery store and finds a really beautiful looking plump salami. He ponders whether it's better to display as art than to consume. Not wanting to make the pterodactyl wait, he proceeds to the front of the store with the prized meat to make the purchase. As he rounds the corner of the aisle, he discovers that an armed gunman is holding up the store.

Young Marco is within a few feet of the masked gunman, who has his back turned to him. He now has a choice. Does he assail the gunman with the mighty cylinder of meat, or does he hide and wait it out? The pterodactyl's promise of a better future hangs in the balance.

Based on how this thread is going, you might want to write about what a bad decision it was to ask for help here. :D

I have a great idea for a short story about decisions. It's totally new and never been done before!

I'm having trouble fleshing out the rest, but I have the first chapter done:

Man #1
"Hi I'm a Mac."

Man #2
"...and I'm a PC."

Generic Woman
"...and I'm looking to buy a new computer."

...and this is where I starting having trouble. But you know, you're welcome to take my wonderful idea and run with it. :D

while young Marco ponders his options, the old lady behind the register pulls a Beretta out of her voluminous hairdo and points it directly at the masked gunman.
She is calm, but so is he. Neither of the two appears to be willing to concede to their opponent and everyone, including young Marco, is standing perfectly still, fearing that any movement could trigger a tragedy.

Time passes, and while in the distance an otherwordly high-pitched screech echoes on the strip-mall walls, Marco is getting hungry.

He now has yet another choice. Does he bite the succulent cured sausage, does he sacrifice it to rescue a once-upon-a-time-damsel in distress, or does he save it in the hope of hitching a ride on the pterodon's scaly back, towards a future of exhilarating adventures?

I have the perfect short story for you ...

I am thinking of buying a new Mac ... should I buy now or should I wait?

Answer ... if you need it now, then buy ... if not wait.

The End

How about the decision to turn off someones life support machine (or not)?

I agree, something along that line would be interesting, IMO.

Perhaps if one knew that they were going to die (ie- not a natural death, something in the vein (no pun intended) of an inmate on death row, a person battleing a sickness, or even something similar to TiMER or Stranger Than Fiction but a countdown to your untimely death.), how would they choose to live their life? Go a traditional route and go to school, get married, hold a steady job or live an unconventional life or begin a conventional life and then a break down and turn to an unconventional life.

On second thought this kind of reminds me of those Mini commercials...

"It's a Mini Adventure." :D
