iwork_09_box_no_year-150x150.jpg

MacLife.de reports [Google translation] that the boxed version of iWork '09 is currently out of stock at a number of prominent German retailers, including Amazon.de, Cyberport.de, Gravis.de, and Alternate.de.

Apple of course began offering the individual iWork '09 applications via the Mac App Store from its launch in early January, pricing the three applications at $19.99 each. The company has, however, continued to sell the boxed version of iWork '09 priced at $79.99 for a single-user license or $99.99 for a family pack.

iWork '09 is two-and-a-half years old at this point, having been introduced in January 2009. Rumors had claimed that Apple was preparing to launch a revamped iWork '11 suite alongside the Mac App Store earlier this year, and iWork shortages at retail stores leading up to the Mac App Store debut had further fueled speculation, but nothing materialized.

Despite the recent iWork stock issues at German retailers, such shortages are not a consistent predictor of Apple product updates, particularly in the case of software, where the company's products have commonly gone out of stock temporarily only to reappear soon after. Nevertheless, it is interesting to speculate about whether the launch of OS X Lion could see Apple make changes to its other software offerings such as iWork by either releasing an updated version or simply moving to exclusive Mac App Store distribution for the current version.

They've probably just stopped making physical copies and are going MAS only (like Lion).

I hope iWork '11 is coming soon though!

Many of the improvements in Lion require revised apps to utilize them. I expect Lion and iWork '11 to be released on the same day.

About time!

I've been waiting for the days of iWork 11 for ages. 3 Years for a mac office productivity suite is too much IMO.

Going by APple previous doings, there will be:

No iLife 11 as a whole package.
Separate individual apps (garageband, iphoto etc) in the app store and al individually priced.
Only one way to get the apps. Via the App Store.

And I'm OK with that I mostly need an updated Numbers, the current one is riddled with bugs and incredibly slow when using complex sheets because of badly sought concurrency.
Maybe Keynote if there are really crazy improvements, as for Pages I'm fine with LaTex.

Anyway... ABOUT TIME!

It's more likely that this means that after Lion is released Apple will stop producing any boxed software

i want to see iWork '11

at this point I have a feeling that Apple is waiting and will launch it as iWork '12 either late this year or early next year. Apple has been splitting all their iWork resources on the iPad and iPhone versions.

It's called iWork '12.

I'm curious what pittance improvements they'll implement. Somehow I doubt it will be a "must have" suite if you have the previous version. Don't forget: 2011 is the year of iPad2. It is NOT the year of stunning Apple software releases.

It's long overdue...

Perhaps better compatibility with the iOS version, typically more transitions/effects for Keynote; more Apple-designed templates for all applications, improved export options (maybe even fixing the Keynote Quicktime export for good!); and support for iCloud, inevitably.

Two and a half years of time available for development says it has to be a nice release.

Hmm really? So you think iPad2 will be more ground-breaking than Lion?

I could see how that might be, but I sure hope not. Mac OS is Apple's bread & butter...well it's supposed to be.

I really think apple is jeopardising their own position here, more and more people will simply switch to Microsoft Office! I mean lets be real here, the current iWork doesn't offer anything groundbreaking, its overdue and has the functionality of Microsoft Office 98. Its time they update!

Lol this really made me think, you can just imagine in 50 or 60 years time some of us will be doing the typical "back in the PC days" talk to young teenagers who will think that PC's where so primitive compared to their iPad 50's.

I really want an updated feature-rich Office replacement in iWork '12. I have office 2008 and I do not want to pay through the roof for a multiple-license copy of 2011 (business).

Likely. iPads are already capable of doing what most people do with PCs. I think PCs will always be here however, just like how room-size computers still exist, they're just mainly server rooms now.

We saw iWork '09 demoed with the Lion improvements at WWDC, so expect an update to '09, not '11.

wrong!

lets be real here, the current iWork doesn't offer anything groundbreaking,

KEYNOTE IS GROUNDBREAKING in and of itself. I have an entire business based on it. Anyone who has used Powerpoint to make professional presentations knows what I mean. Keynote is a godsend to presentation designers. UPDATE IT NOW STEVE!!!

I use Keynote all of the time, and I woudl love to see it updated.

For pages and numbers I find myself using them selectively and likely wouldn't buy them unless they were bundled with Keynote. However, if they had the right kind of updates then perhaps I'd buy them too. (I'm assuming that iWork as a suite is dead much like iLife is dead as a suite or Final Cut Studio is dead as a Suite...just single apps to purchase now)

Ah, I'd be happy with that! It means that it would be free rather than a paid upgrade. The suite has just about all the features I would want anyway.
