Is the a shortcut key that enables me to open the browser and type in the search box?

The only thing that comes to mind is Alfred. Quick-search is one of the features it offers. There's a free version in the App Store, and a paid version with more features from their official page.

Spotlight will also do web searches. Just hit Cmd-Space, type in your search, then choose "Search Web for...". I think you can rearrange the Spotlight listings to make that the first choice too, which makes that simpler.
