took my late 06' mbp to see what was up with the super drive. when i would put a disc in it wouldnt read it, make some noises, and spit it back out. apple says it needs to be replaced for $250. anyone have any cheaper options to fix this? i want to fix it so i can sell it and upgrade.

Buy one of these 3:

Panasonic UJ-857-C
http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=UJ-857-C

Panasonic UJ-867
http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=UJ-867

Hitach/LG GSA-S10N
http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=GSA-S10N

Take your pick and then follow the instructions here:
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Browse/MacBook_Pro
(Since you're using their guide, you could buy from them as well: http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-8x-SuperDrive/IF185-040)

Model number should says on the bottom-side of your computer along the top edge next to your hinge.
