Should a 4g signal be different/stronger than a 3g signal?

I was an ATT customer with the 3gs. I couldn't get a signal in my house so I tried a microcell. the mc was unfortunately spotty at best so i went to verizon for the ip4. i'd like to come back to att for the ip5 but am afraid of having the same poor signal issues in my home. my question is, should i expect the same signal performance on the 4g network as i had on att's 3g network?
