I have a 2018 i7 mac mini with 16 GB RAM hooked up to a LG 4k display (27UK650-W) through HDMI and anytime I wake my computer from lock screen it takes about 14-15 seconds for my desktop to show. Is this normal or considered long? is there anything I can do aside from not locking to speed it up from 15 seconds?

I have the same Mini with 64gb RAM, the screen wakes as quickly as the monitor can turn on (never timed it, but I'd guess less than 5 seconds). However, I don't have a "lock screen", I disabled the automatic logout feature. Also, I have mine set never to sleep. There seem to be a lot of sleep issues on this and other Mini's, so I disabled that, only the monitor sleeps.

So are you saying that it always stays on? Isn’t that a drain on power? And if a kid or another person (hypothetically) wanted to log on to your computer they could?

can I set a Lock Screen and set it to never sleep? Would that help?

Are you suggesting that my monitor is the cause of the 15 second delay?

I'm not suggesting anything, no idea what is happening on your computer, was just answering your question about how long my display takes to wake up. I shut the mini down completely at the end of the day. I live alone, so I'm not concerned about anyone logging into my Mini.

I will note that I'm using a USB-C to Displayport cable however, there are some threads here regarding wake-up issues on the 2018 Mini with HDMI monitors. I have not really followed them, so don't know if that could be related.

Ok, I just checked and although it is a HDMI monitor it also has a USB-c port and that’s what’s being used. So it’s not HDMI in my case

Anyone else have any experience with this?

I have a 2018 Mac mini i7 64GB Ram 512GB SSD. I had the same 4K display. When connected via HDMI the wake time from monitor sleep was 7-9 seconds. Really slow, but not as slow as yours. I did not allow the mini to sleep, only the monitor, that may be the difference. This performance was very disappointing to me as I was used to the essentially instant on of my old 2013 iMac.

I also used USB-C to Display Port, and preferred this connection as it performed better waking from sleep--around 5 seconds.

I then got an M1 Mini and used the same monitor and connections. There was essentially no difference in the wake time of the monitor.

I have now replaced the monitor with an LG 27MD5KL-B monitor. The monitor is connected with a Thunderbolt cable. I use the default for the display resolution (retina scaled to 2560x1440). This configuration is much faster. I use my Apple Watch to login, and from hitting a key to seeing the display is less than 2 seconds.

So, you can probably solve (mostly) your problem by simply paying about $1200 for a new monitor :)

BTW, I love the M1 mini. It is really quick, runs very cool to the touch and is mostly completely silent--had the fans come on a couple of times when encoding video. I will never use an Intel machine again. I will likely upgrade to the next gen iMac with Apple Silicon and a retina screen, however. Particularly if the first bunch of them has second generation Apple Silicon.

I have a 2018 Mac Mini and two monitors. Both are connected via adapters into DVI.

My main one (LG IPS234) is connected via a USB-C to DVI adapter, and when waking from sleep, it tekes about 15 seconds to turn on.

The other monitor is connected via a HDMI to DVI adapter and it wakes after about 1 second.

I switched the adapters and it helped a bit, altough now the one that took 15 seconds takes about 5 seconds, the other one now also takes about 5 seconds to wake up.

It wasn't like that in previous versions of the OS (in my case Mojave).

I can't remember the time it took when connected via HDIM directly, the colours were awfull.
