Should I activate my 3GS?

Should I activate my 3GS or should I just put the SIM card from my 3G into the new phone?

For some reason it seems that I am eligible for another upgrade in January (my original upgrade date before I bitched a fit).

If I activate the new phone I am wondering if it would change that date.

Activate through Itunes. It'll reset your date but I believe if you put the SIM into the phone it won't work properly.

Why does it matter if you're eligible for another upgrade in January? If you have a 3GS, don't you wanna use it now?
