I'm contemplating on whether I should buy an iPod now or wait for a newer version to come out. I don't need anything bigger than 60GB.

I've had every iPod that came out well a majority of them and They've all broken on me. The 5th gen 60GB I have now keeps freezing on me when I play certain songs. I don't really want to buy another iPod but there's nothing else that's comparable to it minus the freezing/fragileness.

I'm curious as to what people think is best.:apple:

According to the buyer's guide, a new iPod might be released soon. Regarding your freezings, maybe you should take it to an Apple Store. Maybe the problem is with your audio files. Does it always happen with the same songs? If it does, try re-importing those songs, they may be corrupted.

the speculation is obvious and ubiquitous: an iPhone-like iPod is rumored to be in production and scheduled for release within the next several months.

if you like the current design of the iPod, buy now. if you're clamoring for an iPhone-like iPod, you should hold off.

it doesn't sound like you need a new iPod. your audio problem may be resolved by a quick visit to an Apple store or a look online in Apple's forums (or here). or it could be as simple as reimporting those songs.

As i'm telling every one of my good friends, DO NOT BUY NOW.
Even if you really need a music player.
Buy a shuffle to hold you over.
Save your big chunk of cash for the sure to be brilliant new iPod.

My bet is that a new iPod will be released later this year (sept/oct) in time for xmas sales. It's up to you whether or not it's worth the wait.

Count on them being updated sometime after early September (when the student sale ends) and before the holiday season begins. My guess is sometime in late October to early November.

Beat me to it:) But CalBoy is probably right, once the student free ipod offer is done, I would think so is the current ipod generation.

its been rumored that a wide 3.5 touchscreen ipod will be released, there are pictures of it, theres alot that look like the one out now, and one with an aluminum case, so better not get one, its worth the wait, but remember its a rumor, here are pics:

theres alot that look like the ones above, just search 6G ipod on google images, the rare one if apple turns to all aluminum ipods might look like this:

CLick here to see it, i ran out of room to put pics, this one is different than the rest =]

they might just ugrade the existing one, or give it a bigger screen, if they adapt touch screens, they MIGHT have touchscreen click-wheels, also if they turn to touch screens, they might have to turn to the ipod thats like the one in the iphone, think about it, a touch screen, and the ipods we have now...:apple:

p.s. goto http://flickr.com/photos/inspirat/sets/72157594443268804/ to see sumones porfile full of 6g ipod pix!!

p.p.s the screen will be 480p hd

Why are you coming back for more?

Seriously, I know most people worship Apple on here, but step a back a sec and tell me why you want to pay top dollar for something that in your experience is likely to break.

Honestly, I'm very interested

OH man, foot in my mouth...
I drug my ipod behind my ATV today for about a mile... it still functions as an external hard drive... but its pretty much destroyed. (as you might have guessed)

I recently bought the Harmon Kardon Drive+Play, and a portable DVD player that docks my ipod...

I lied, I will now be buying a 30 gig to replace my 60 gig rev1 5th gen ipod.
Hopefully I can sell that 30 after the next model is announced.

There is always going to be a next generation.
yes but when the current model/form factor has been out for 2 years now, you might not want to jump at buying a new one if you don't have to...especially after seeing the touch technology implemented in the iPhone (which will inevitably make its way into the iPod).

Apple is...

I've had so many iPods I can't even remember how many of each generation and hd size I've had, and flash drive for that matter.

I've had the 1st gen with the click wheel 5Gb I think it was
And then I bought the 2nd gen with the 4 circle buttons
I bought the 10GB,15Gb, and 20GB
I then was on the waiting list for the 1st gen minis which I had stolen and I bought another one for 400 I think it was
then I got the color which I was told by a mac sales person years ago would not come out anytime in the future

And when the 5th gen came out I had 4 diff ones 3 from the store and one from a friend
I've seen a good percentage(more than half) of the people who buy iPods complain about it freezing. It's not the songs on my comp it's the HD. I dropped it once or twice and that will do it. They're very delicate. If Apple made a sturdy designed iPod they won't be the apple they are today.

These are just iPods I've bought for myself. I've gotten a few for my sister(mini and 5th gen 30GBvid), 2 for my gf(2 minis), my friends for bdays.

So figuratively I've spent maybe 3-5k on iPods alone since they came out. times that by hundreds of thousands and you'll see why Steve Jobs turned Apple around with the Ipod alone, never mind the ibooks, imacs, macbooks, and so forth.

Apple is smart about what they're doing. Look at the at&t deal for example which i will not get into here. Apple will get a percentage of every iPhone at&t sells that's just crazy! At&t was just desperate for the exclusive contract with apple and they knew they'd bend over backwards for the contract. Enough said here.:apple:

Wait...or get a shuffle and wait....the full iPod and the shuffle can co-exist very well, and if you run, you'd be set!

What should college students do, who qualify for the $199 iPod rebate???

I have an old 20gb non-color iPod...

The deal lasts until September 16, 2007. No way will the new iPod be released then.

Should I just purchase the 80gb? What a bummers.

When does school start? You'll need your computer before school starts, and if you're a switcher, then you'll need a little more time to learn some stuff. The iPod will not be updated before the student sale ends. The point of the sale is to help Apple lower it's inventory of old models. If you'll notice, the entire iPod line (that qualifies for the rebate) has not been updated often during the sale.

If you want/need it now, buy it. I have had every ipod since the 2nd gen. Watch for the announcement of the new ones and ebay it the day of or the day after. Its kind of underhanded (not really) but you take advantage of the people who might not be as up to date on knowledge as we are. I have never sold one for a price that wasnt way over what I would take for it, even made money on th last two, since I buy alot of cool accessories all the time and keep all the boxes. And always keep a shuffle for the heck of it.
