Should I buy an OEM apple replacement battery for my unibody aluminum 13" macbook?

Or can I look for cheaper generic replacement batteries?

I would never trust or recommend a battery that didn't come from Apple. Too many have reported problems with 3rd party batteries. This should answer most, if not all, of your battery questions:

I have used Ebay batteries in my macbook, powerbook, and ibook. The oldest battery being nearly 3 years old and it still holds a surprisingly good charge. I personally have experienced problems with both my macbook and ibook's OEM battery. So for me it seems safer going with an Ebay battery for something like 1/3 to 1/6 of the cost.

Not saying what to do but my experience has been great with Ebay batteries.

I am currently using a 3rd party battery i bought from Amazon. Here is a link. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002L1MOLE Battery works great. Coconut battery is reporting 99% capacity after 3 full charge cycles. I had the battery for 4 months now, and no degradation yet. I highly recommend this battery. It is for the 15" though.

Has anyone with a OEM battery found that automatic sleeping when battery is drained does not work? I thought this was a known problem with any non-apple battery.
