I was wondering whether you would recommend using iTunes to buy songs, or just downloading them from LimeWire. Here in Canada, it isn't illegal to download content, just to upload it, though I realize there are moral implications.

What are the advantages of buying songs? I'm just not wanting to spend over $1000 to buy my collection. Are there sources cheaper than iTunes?

Buy a $500 guitar, take some lessons and you are good to go.

Give a man a fish, and he has food for one day, teach him how to fish and he has food for a lifetime :D

I buy my music on iTunes. I like that I can buy individual songs and don't have to buy the full album. I think it's nice buying music as I see it as adding to my collection.

Are iTunes songs better quality than most available for free download? Can I back up my iTunes library to my external hard drive?

It's possible. And I think you would be able to, but the music you buy from iTunes should also be stored on your account, in case your hard drive crashes.

Buy from iTunes. Not only for moral reasons, but also for convenience.

Better quality, tags properly filled out, album art embedded, etc.

Yes the music on iTunes is of very high quality. Higher than what you will find on those P2P programs / sites.

You can back up your music library on an external HD (that's what I do) and even DVD. All your music if kept in a file on your computer which is easy to drag and drop into any device.

This should be the case - but you can't. You can only download your music from iTunes once. Apps are another matter.
