I have a 2011 Macbook Pro and I was wondering whether checking it or not checking it would be more beneficial... I'm not worried about energy consumption but more about the health of my hard drive. I have sleep set to 20 mins so the hard drive would turn off in sleep anyways so would unchecking the option be better?

Hard drives now are much more reliable now.
It's perfectly safe to use the power manager feature.

Thank you for the reply. That makes me feel a lot better since my old iMac's hard drive died very quickly and I was wondering whether it was because of this... Just wondering though, does the hard drive affect Flash player performance at all? Like lagging frame rates or anything?

Check it uncheck it hardly makes a difference. The HDD goes almost never to sleep after the default 10min. You need to shut of loads of things and do stuff that don't need any disk access (like reading an ebook or pdf).
Spotlight wakes it up every 5 min. A Browser writing to the hdd cache wakes it. It never sleeps.
