I've been reading that when you do a clean install (restore, update, set up as new) the battery life is better and other problems are avoided

but are supposed to restore from an itunes backup or icloud after restoring as new or just use it as new and sync all your content?

and wouldn't you lose your game saves and texts if you do this?

Just update, you should be fine. If you have issues, backup (to iCloud or iTunes, doesn't matter), Restore your phone, and then restore your most recent backup. Clean Install is not necessary 99% of the time, some people just like to start fresh.
