Should I do the upgrade process with my new watch before I upgrade my iPhone, or after?

Upgrading watch from Apple Series 8 to Series 9,
and also upgrading iPhone Promax 14 to Promax 15. I received them both today, and just wondered the correct order to upgrade.

The only thing that matter is watchOS update must come after iOS update as iOS must not be older than watchOS itself for watch to function.
I don’t know if you jumped to beta bandwagon or not, but assuming no, yes you should upgrade iPhone first before upgrading your watch.

I do not really know if it matters but I do the phone 1st then the watch.

I'm not sure if you already did the update, but I had the same upgrades. First, I updated the IoS of the iPhone 14. Second, I unpaired the watch 8. Third, I created a back up in iCloud. Then, I did the iPhone to iPhone transfer which took a couple of hours. Finally, I paired the new watch 9 to the new iPhone. Everything worked out great!
