If I buy the 16GB 3GS from Wal-Mart for $97, and then sell it brand new, unopened on craigslist for $500 so I can keep the unlimited data plan, is it worth it? Or is it too risky. If I can find someone to pay $500 for it, I think it might be worth a shot.

I'm not sure you're going to see $500 for your 16 GB 3GS but I could be wrong.

Why would someone pay $500 for something they can get easily for $97???

If it's new in box, I know I can get AT LEAST $400.

Then, I can always wait until Monday after the new phone and pricing is announced, and I can return it to Wal-Mart if I want to.

I'm just saying, if the new iPhone is too expensive, or for some reason you can't buy it at the unsubsidized price, I can just return the one I bought from Wal-Mart.

Yeah but if you sell it, you run the risk of not getting an early upgrade at all.

The problem is you will have a $30 a month data plan now, and no iphone to use with it. If you get a next generation iphone when its released, you will have to either get a separate data plan for that, OR pay the unsubsidized price for the new iphone and use your current data plan, which could cost you $600 to $700.

If I end up returning the phone to Wal-Mart, the plan would be cancelled (if the unsubsidized price is too much, and I can't sell the iPhone).

And if I can sell the phone for $450, let's say, then it will only cost me $150 out of pocket to get the new iPhone at the unsubsidized price.

The unsubsidized pricing will be $599 and $699 *IF* the pricing model is like the previous years.

Go to an AT&T store and you have thirty days to return it, then you walk in and do a "swap" for the new iPhone.
