Should I extend the warranty on my iPhone 5?

The device is 51 weeks old, has gone through 88 battery cycles and performs flawlessly, so I'm not sure whether it is worth it or not to pay out anymore money.

I can see my using it another year before upgrading on the Apple front; I still have Android devices I use.

Not sure I understand this - when I bought the phone I was planning on keeping it - it was unlocked.

You can't extend the warranty through Apple. You have to add AppleCare+ in the first 60 days. You may already have 2 years of coverage. Many credit cards double the manufacturers warranty.

Okay, so that means you will keep it for a long time, so try to see if you can extend it.

You've had it almost a year and there are only 88 charge cycles??? I would say forget the warranty, you hardly use the thing and it's still almost new. My iPhone 5 is two weeks older than yours and it has 635 charge cycles...

Yeah, I bought it second-hand and unlocked in May..it only had 45 charge cycles on it then.
