So,
I currently have the SE which I have had for 3/4 years. I want to upgrade, and I was going to buy the XR after the price drop however someone said to me that the iPhone 11 wasn't going to be much more expensive.

So should I get the XR or is the extra cash for the iPhone 11 worth it? I plan on having the phone for a good 3/4/5 years.

Thanks.

It comes down to, are you willing to pay $100 for a better camera (night shots and ultra-wide)? If not, get the XR.

If you're upgrading in 3 years, get the XR. Save the $100 and put it towards iPhone 5G.

If you're upgrading in 4-5 years, get the 11 because of the extra RAM.

It's such a small price bump I'd get the 11. It certainly has a $100 worth of tech advancements. Plus it will likely have an additional year of iOS updates.

Are you going to keep the phone for a few years like you did with your SE? If so why would you purchase a Phone that’s already a year-old? The price difference is minimal and the newest model will be supported longer.

I had an Xr and now have an 11. Would not have paid the upgrade difference but my daughter needed a new phone so I gave her mine. That being said I would pay the $100 upgrade for the 11. I do like the camera quite a bit more. Plus the extra gig of ram does make web pages refresh less often.

If you want to keep it for that many years, an 11 would do just fine. It's a great phone!

Something better might come along next year, but if you are keeping the phone for so long, it may be best to avoid buying a new design that hasn't been tested yet. The 11 is a solid choice.

Your SE has 2 GB RAM. Xr has 3, 11 has 4. 3 will be noticeable improvement for you (webpage refresh) probably, 4 will not. Bit might be in your 3-5 yr window though.

A13 processor (11) vs. A12 (Xr) will not be noticeable for you I suspect. Even in your 3-5 yr window. Think either will be supported w iOS upgrades up to 5 yrs from now. 11 zero risk. Xr slight risk.

If you want better night photos, or ultra wide lens (2nd camera), 11 is what you need.

That‘s the tech side of it.

Me personally, I would get the 11 for 3-5 yr window. $600 and $700 is the same number for that timeframe.

Don't do it. Get the 11 pro. The extra weight is ridiculous. Battery on should be better as well. I went from an SE to an XR for almost a year. Trading it in for an 11 pro

Save up the extra $$$

The weight difference between XR/11 and 11 Pro is 6 grams, or the weight of a nickel. Hardly "ridiculous."

I went from an SE to XR and love the XR. It’s the best new iPhone that Apple released since.. the SE probably.

If the money’s not a big issue for you then by all means get the 11, no doubt it’s an even better version of essentially the same device, very much an “s” style update of the XR. But I do think some of the talk in this thread about the XR being a worse prospect long term is slightly overblown. It has an insanely powerful processor (two generations newer than that in the very latest iPad, don’t forget) and 3gb of ram, of course it’ll be good for another 5 years, by which point you’ll be itching for a new phone whichever you buy now.

There’s is no difference between the XR and the 11, except the XR has nicer colours. Spend the admittedly small price delta on something else instead. Get the XR

I’m sure this will infuriate the usual “get the most expensive option” crowd, but they have a vested interest in Apple’s stock market price rather than your best interests. XR vs 11 will make no difference whatsoever to your life except that the colours on the XR are better

Also who gives a flying **** about the RAM, 3GB vs 4GB, whatever... by the time that becomes an issue in a decade or so both the XR and 11 will be obsolete

I currently have an SE and I’m waiting for 2020, given the rumours of a slightly smaller form factor (5.4 inch). Plus 5G and hopefully USB-C. I‘ll probably replace my battery though as it’s nearing 80%.

if you can wait another year it will probably be worth it.

If money is tight get the XR, if not get the 11. The difference between the 2 are minimal now. The 11 might get an extra update (or 2) down the line if you're keeping it long term. Is that worth the extra $100 to you?

Try the size first, going from an SE both are likely to be too big for you to enjoy, although that maybe won’t be the case but play around in store testing the size.

The 5.8” Pro is a more manageable device, but obviously more money, or you can try to hold out until March and see if the rumoured new SE actually becomes reality or whether it’s yet another false claim.

5G might not be viable for several years. Building penetration is yet an unsolved major issue. For me, people suggesting that you wait until next year because of 5G, is not the best advice.

you notice that the web pages refresh less often with the 11?

I think 11 especially since you'd like it to last a few years. But do you have an Apple Store nearby? It's much better to see colors in person, and hold phone before buying. It will be a big jump in style and size from SE.

I went to 11 Pro (not Max) because I like the smaller size, however it's still larger than SE.
