should i get the new ipad?

I have never used an ipad before. In fact I have little knowledge of its actual practical use. Is it a practical purchase? Or is it just a glorified toy? Please help me understand as I am intrigued by the device but dont have money to waste on something that is just meant to be for fun. Thank you in advance for any help any of you will offer.
