I have an iPad 1 and never jail broke it because I didn't want to hassle when Apple rolled out an update. Anyway, since 5.1.1 is as far as Apple is going with the iPad 1 I'm wondering if I should jail break it now.

I have a few questions please...

1) Is there any downside now to jail breaking an iPad 1?

2) Can I still get apps from the App Store after jail breaking?

3) I need to access an Apple Airport Time Capsule with the Airport Utility app but the Airport Utility app won't work on an iPad 1. Will the latest version of the Airport Utility app work on a jail broken iPad 1?

Thank you very much!

when was the last time you tried to download airport app? Try again as few months ago Apple added ability to download latest version compatible with your iOS.

I tried to download the Airport Utility app just yesterday to my iPad 1 and it clearly says it won't work on IOS 5.1.1. Where did you read that it is supposed to work on the iPad 1? If you want to comment please go here because I restarted this thread in the "jail break" category: https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=18823259#post18823259

I didn't see the "jail break" category before so thank you for telling me that. I restarted the thread here: https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=18823259#post18823259

Some legacy apps, if downloaded directly on the older firmware iDevice will work rather than attempting to do so via iTunes.

None at all. In fact since iOS 5.1.1 is still being signed by Apple for it, if you **** it up you can just restore and jailbreak again. No worries!

2) Can I still get apps from the App Store after jail breaking?

Of course. Jailbreaking just adds the ability to install unsigned apps. You can still install signed apps from the store just fine.

Probaly not. Jailbreaking doesn't let you run code that requires a newer API version. There's a possibility it might work if it just "requires" the newer OS and doesn't use any of the new APIs, but that's unlikely.

Its there in the app store but a message pops up when I try to install it that says it won't work on 5.1.1.

The Airport utility was released for iOS 5. Probably as the iPhone version.

But if you don't see it then it's probably not available.

If it's important to get recent apps then you might want to upgrade the device. iPad 1 is really old. You can easily upgrade to iPad 2 or newer for just a small amount more.

I would try:
Download from desktop iTunes with your account
Go to Purchased app section on your iPad and download there

If that doesn't work, download of older versions is probably disabled on that app.

My old iPad 1 is now successfully accessing everything on my Time Capsule. Yay! What I did was to set up the Time Capsule with my MBP17 using the Airport Utility and then I bought the File Browser app for the iPad. With the File Browser app I can view everything on my iPad thats in the Time Capsule. That File Browser app works great!

I'm still deciding on whether to get a new iPad or jail break the old one but at least I can take my time with that decision. I just sent an email to the guys that make File Browser to see if that app will still work on a jail broken iPad 1.

QUESTION: Can you guys recommend where I can find the best and simplest instructions for how to jail break an iPad 1? And also how to revert back to "unbroken" factory settings later if needed?

Thank you. :)

Hey thanks for the link. :)

Does a jail broke iPad 1 with the iOS 7 theme mean that it will run all the Apple app store apps like a newer iPad will? I'm asking because I need to know if the File Browser app will work on a jail broken iPad 1 because the developers said they didn't know.

RedmondPie always posts the best tutorials: http://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak...h-and-more-using-absinthe-2.0-video-tutorial/

I also have a Jailbroken iPad 1 and it's awesome, still running like a champ and with the iOS 7 theme I don't see the need (but want!) of an iPad Air yet.
