I have an iPhone 3G with the latest released OS. I'm thinking of jailbreaking (using Spirit; I've heard it's the best one?) but since OS 4.0 is coming out soon, I'm wondering if it makes sense to just wait for that to come out and be jailbroken. I'm new to jailbreaking so I'd be interested to hear arguments for or against.

Might be a good time for you to experiment with jailbreaking now, as there is a pretty fast learning curve ahead of you. When 4.0 comes out, you'll probably have a better idea of the cydia apps you'd like to keep on your phone and you'll be starting with a fresh restore of 4.0 (most likely). Keep in mind that it will be some time before a majority of the cydia apps are 4.0 compatible, so enjoy a 3.1.3 jb for a while.

Just my opinion...so flamers :)

Wait....

I just got my
3gs
and
did it in about 4 min. Really easy but now with the 4hd coming out on June 7th I'm restoring it and returning and canceling the contract. Will be out 70 or so but I'm not waiting 2 more years to get the "newest" iPhone.

Just a thought - and I know it's probably difficult to answer at this point, but do you think when 4.0 is released, it's going to require a DFU restore or just a simple update in iTunes - how do we know what Apple have included in this update to detect already jailbroken phones, if that's possible...

I just figure because the 4.0 software is a fundamental step and will be so 'different' there may be some complications with a simple update? Thoughts? How are you going to update and when?

You can do a regural update or a restore mode update.
Up to you.
Apple doesnt check or detect already JB phone or stuff like that.

I used Spirit. Tried BlackRain without success several times. Spirit, first time success, jailbroken within seconds.

It's up to you. :)

Perfect reply :)

Go for it and then you'll have some experience of Cydia etc :D

My friend just jailbroke this week, I say wait cause 4.0 comes out next week, then u will have to re jailbreak, but if you dont have a lot from cydia, go ahead and jailbreak

You aren't going to be jailbreaking on day one of 4.0. Even if you can, almost all the apps that make JBing worthwhile will not work on a major new OS. So JB now, then sit back and enjoy. Don't feel compelled to JB 4.0 right away, let the adventurous get thier feet wet before you make the second plunge.
