Should I JB and if so which process

3GS, 359.3 bootrom, 4.1(8B117) 05.14.02 modem.

Please confirm Im correct- I cannot unlock at this point in time with my setup.

I want 4.2. If I upgrade using itunes, will it also upgrade my modem? Does it matter if the modem is upgraded?

Is there a custom ipsw that installs 4.2 but does not UG the modem?

Please list pros/cons of upgrading vs jailbreaking

I find Redsn0w works pretty well for a 4.1 untethered jailbreak. If you want to upgrade to 4.2.1, you can. You will just have to use the new Greenpois0n RC 6 to do it. If you upgrade to 4.2.1, your baseband will update to 5.15.04 rather than the 5.14 you are on, but it doesn't matter because neither basebands are (or will be) unlockable. If you wish to unlock, you will need to upgrade your baseband to 6.15.00 which is the one from the iPad and you will do this using Redsn0w. The only downsides are that you will lose GPS functionality and it will be very hard to restore to stock Apple firmware.

Im not using Greenpois0n again, last time it f'ed up my iphone. Is there an expected rednow 4.2 jb soon?

Well you could run Redsn0w tethered... Another option (for Mac users) is the new Pwnagetool that was just released recently.

EDIT: I've seen good results from jailbreaking tethered with RS and then running GP over it to untether it.
 
Greenp0ison on a mac at least is a really effective 4.2.1 jailbreak. I haven't had any complaints so far.
 
sn0wbreeze (windows only) also updated to untether jailbreak 4.2.1
