I'm debating either 48gb or 64gm for my new Mac Studio m4.(I've been using the M1 since it debuted).

A 2TB option also has my eye.
This will be a buy now and use it for years which is why I'm asking for advice.

My main uses:
photo editing
documentary and short video editing
writing

Thank in advance!

I would go with 48GB with those use-cases. I would also look into a lower storage tier, no reason to pay Apple's outrageous prices when you can get a larger external SSD that's just as fast.

I'm debating an M4 Studio with 48 GB and 1 TB vs building a 9900X system.

I would use the M1 Studio along with the M4 Studio with an eye to replacing my iMac Pro display/speakers/microphones with an ASD.

MicroCenter had the M4 Studio with 48 GB of RAM and 1 TB SSD for $2,299 or $400 off yesterday. I just checked their site and they are sold out this afternoon. That was the highest percentage discount that I've seen for that upgraded model.

My opinion, obtain a decent amount of memory on the device, as much as you can afford. And, like others have stated, obtain external storage elsewhere. Be sure to verify its speed...

Drop down the SSD to 1TB - you can add fast external storage thats just as fast as the internal for a fraction of the price.
Spend the saved money on the RAM upgrade, considering it cannot be upgraded later.
It's exactly what I did too!

What advantages do you expect the M4 to provide you over the M1? The use case seems something that would not benefit significantly moving from an M1 to an M4.
