I'm looking at possibly purchasing a 2008 model 24 inch iMac 3.06 ghz core 2 duo 2gb ram 512mb 8800gs on ebay.

However I have read several people saying that their 8800 gs card was faulty and this problem appears to be not uncommon; how much of a risk am I taking by possibly buying this machine? Should I just ignore it and look for a different model iMac?

Steer clear of the Macs with Nvidia 8x00 GPUs, they are prone to failure.
?? Are they really? I have a 24" C2D iMac I'm selling soon with the 8800GS and it's never given me any problems at all. (used as primary machine since 2008) I've always been really pleased with it.

I've not been aware of a consensus on the Nvidia 8x00 Macs being unreliable? Completely passed me by.

Yeah, the failure rate is alarmingly high.
