So I recently upgraded and got the 2019 15" MacBook Pro that came out in May 2019. It has the i9 Processor with configurations of 32GB Memory and 1TB SSD. I love the machine, as I am an editor and its blazing fast.

Now today I see the new MacBook Pro 16 with MUCH BETTER features- including configurations up to 8TB of SSD and 64GB of Memory. All for about the same price I paid for mine (can't recall off hand, but with tax mine was over $4,000). This is really upsetting to me. Less than 6 months after I get the machine I think is the one, Apple comes out with a bigger screen, better resolution, a "better" keyboard (though I have no issues with my Butterfly) and the storage and Memory, plus graphic cards. I could have just waited 5 months. TO upgrade to the 1TB of storage on my MacBook was $400.00 I believe or even more. It seems cheaper now to upgrade to a TB. This is why I am so concerned. I spent more money for less space basically in the configuration.

Should I feel bad about this? I edit on iMovie and am just getting into Final Cut Pro X. I have the 2TB of iCloud Storage, but I am still using a LOT of storage because of video, and could have used the extra internal space. I just feel I got cheated. How much better is the 16' MacBook Pro vs the one I got (the high end 15 MacBook Pro 2019, i9 processor).

If I try to sell it, I don't even know how much I could get for it now that the lineup is discontinued. Thanks for any advice.

You’re asking for advice on whether you should regret it? I can give you bad advice to a bad question, but I don’t think that was your intent.

I think you meant to ask whether or not you should sell your 15 inch and buy the 16. My advice is that if you even need to ask, then no, you shouldn’t.

Unless you want to keep up with the Jones.

Well I guess yeah- wondering if I should sell it too. But also, I am sort of now in a buyer's remorse. I spent a lot on it and now less then half a year has gone by, and they've already discontinued it.

This is a natural part of life.

Once it happens enough times with enough models and enough companies you realize it’s just a computer and stop chasing the latest model.

realistically whats the resale going to be on a computer that cost north of $4k when a new machine came out with presumably much better reliability, multiple improvements, and effectively a massive price cut given how much more you get?

if you liked it when you bought it, you should still like it today.

I appreciate the answers so far. I am not trying to sound ungrateful or obnoxious- its just that there are a lot of features on the new one that aren't on mine. So I just wanted insight.

Did you needs or workflow change since buying your current machine? That's the right question.

New features? Dude... less than an inch bigger screen and a different keyboard. That’s it. Everything else is just a bump, not really “new features.” It’s not a giant revolutionary redesign.

So here’s the thing. I could even argue that the 15 incher is better. It’s thinner and lighter than the 16, the keyboard keys are more stable, and it has a larger Touch Bar surface.

Most of what actually matters hasn’t changed. The rest is hype/marketing.

HOWEVER! If having the latest stuff so you can look cool, then the 15 incher just isn’t enough. You’ll want dat thicc 16 because size matters.

No I wanted the additional storage and graphics that seem to be cheaper on the 16. But thanks for the earlier info on the Touch Bar and keyboard.

I had the same issue with the iPad 3 and the 4 came out about 6 months later with much better performance (but at least the 3 had a retina screen). But you live with it and I eventually got an iPad Pro down the line. Still, for editing, you can get a couple more years out of the 15 easy and as lovely as the 16 is, probably not worth a 2k swing for you to sell and max out a 16. Only when you truly run into limits with the 15 (disk space, rendering, exporting issues, keyboard problems) should you sell. Unless 2K is nothing to you, then go ahead and go for it. Otherwise be a bit bitter, but edit and enjoy.

Totally get where your coming from. But from a cost perspective, you'll feel way more ripped off taking a huge loss on your laptop and repurchasing the 16".

There isn't anything on this new computer that is going to feel incredibly different. Some quality of life fixes, slightly bigger screen, better (hopefully) keyboard, and a par for the course spec bump.

It's a great refresh, but not something I'd sell a 6 month old MBP over.

Thanks to others too. I am keeping my MBP for now.

Reviews have confirm the 16 inch has better thermal management since it’s thicker with revamped heat pipes, it really depends if you notice ur current throttles to base click or not, sadly the resale value of 15 has gone to the bottom of the tank, I noticed lots of folks are trying to unload them with very enticing discount with no success, if you think all you losing is around 1-2 grand after selling them imo get the 16 but if it’s more then that I would just hold onto the 15, it’s still a good laptop, just not as good as the new 16

keep it and focus on doing the work, not the gear.
you still have a lot of headroom on this machine if you're editing on iMovie and you're only just moving to FCX. use the money on courses or camera gear.
all gear will get obsolete eventually. don't let the macrumors hype make you think you need the latest and greatest to be happy.

Firstly, I understand the way you feel but remember, the computer you have is crazy good!

What I would do is decide how much I was willing to lose to buy the 16" MacBook Pro. Lets say that number is $600, I would put my 15" up for sale and if it sells, I would buy the 16".

If your not willing to take a decent hit on the computer, then there is no reason to try and sell it or worry about it, you can upgrade again in two - three years and the 16" will have even better options then.

Me personally, I would be willing to take a certain loss and buy what makes me happy, I especially feel this way when it comes to something I use every day like a computer, phone or TV.

You'll probably take a bath on the price, supply is increaasing and the demand isn't all that high. The butterfly keyboard has the effect of depressing the value.

Should I feel bad about this? I
No, because that's the nature of computers, there's always a new one around the corner.

I spent a lot on it and now less then half a year has gone by, and they've already discontinued it.
You did, and selling it to buy another new one, is a lose lose proposition - financially. Don't get me wrong, the 16" is a fantastic computer. Likewise, the 2019 is, Apple fixed a lot of what was wrong with the 2016 model line.

What happens 6 months from now when Apple updates their line yet again, will you feel compelled to sell the 16" that you bought (if you chose to buy it), to get the new one.

The bottom line is, if your current machine does what you need it too, and there's no reason to doubt it doesn't because you wouldn't be looking to sell it if Apple didn't update the line - be content. I totally get that you dropped a lot of money on your current machine, but its not like it suddenly does less.

If you have the Vega 20, I don't think it'd be worth it unless you really hate that keyboard. You can sell it, but you're going to take a loss since you won't get nearly what you paid for it. Apple does have a trade in, so see what that would be for the "lowest possible price" and post it on eBay or Craigslist. :p
