I'm hoping to get my first Mac this summer, most probably a Macbook. I keep hearing rumors about it being updated this summer. Is that true? If so, I've also heard that in general, the first shipment comes with faults that are fixed in the next one. Usually, how long a wait is the next shipment?

Just buy when you need one, there will always be an update coming up, so if you are waiting for the next best thing you will always be waiting.

Wait as long as you can. If you can wait, then you don't need a new one yet.

It is worth waiting.

"waiting for Godot"

Agreed unless you have a lot of money you will never stay ahead of the tech curb. If the MB looks applealing to you now then it is not going to look any less so after an update. If there is some major characteristic that you need and are waiting for such as blu ray then hold off, otherwise you are wasting time drooling over products instead of having fun with them.

....and if I wash my car today, tomorrow it will rain...but at least I'll have a clean car.

Buy it now. You won't regret it at all, and you can save several hundred bucks on the newest model if you get it refurbished directly from Apple.

It sounds like you've been looking forward to getting one this summer. Don't wait, just get it. Unless you're looking at a new form-factor being released entirely, the Macbook design has been around long enough that I wouldn't expect there to be any issues.

Thanks for the tips!

My plan is to get it this summer whether or not it is updated. I just want to avoid what happened last year with my iPod. I bought a white 30G in August and three weeks later the new ones came out.:(

The iBooks and MacBooks have typically been updated in the Oct/Nov and Apr/May timeframes.

Here are some dates (within a day or two) of both refreshes and new design introductions for iBooks and MacBooks.
05/01/2001
10/16/2001
05/20/2002
11/06/2002
04/22/2003
10/22/2003
04/19/2004
10/19/2004
07/26/2005
05/16/2006
11/08/2006
05/15/2007
11/01/2007

My bet is Tuesday, May 13th, 2008 for the next refresh.

If you're worried about an update, just wait until you need it. Or set a date for yourself and buy it on that date no matter what.

But if you're not in a rush now, don't buy it. Something is always around the corner, so if you can wait until you get to the corner, you'll be happier.

just my opinion but I feel there is never a right or wrong time to by yourself a mac. There is always a refresh or update just a few months away as the computing world is constantly moving forward. I buy for my needs, when I need it or I would go mad waiting and then waiting some more. I have just bought the white high end macbook and love it.

Buy what you need,

or,

wait for what you want.

The decision is yours. Please realize that you could end up waiting a long time thereby loosing out on the pleasure of having a new computer today.

I think you should till the use the Air LED backlit screen in the macbook, for a sound(er) environmental purchase and better battery life. I mean, they've already got the screens on hand, right?
