I have an Apple Watch Series 4 (connected to Verizon Cellular).

When I go out for a run/walk/bike ride I leave the iPhone XS home and just take the Watch. It does connect to Verizon Cellular when out of Wifi/BlueTooth range of the iPhone, but Messages don't come through to the Watch. I was under the impression that if the iPhone is either Locked or Turned Off the messages are supposed to reach the Watch. I have spoken to both Verizon and Apple but it seems like it is still happening. Any ideas if I am interpreting the "rules" incorrectly? Settings for Notifications on the Watch are set (at least for Messages and Phone) to Mirror the iPhone.

Thanks.

Not quite. Your paired iPhone can't be turned off for SMS/MMS Messages. To send and receive SMS/MMS from cellular models of Apple Watch, your paired iPhone must be powered on and connected your carrier via Wi-Fi or cellular, but your iPhone doesn’t need to be nearby.

If your iPhone isn’t connected or powered on, you can send and receive iMessages on your Apple Watch when your Apple Watch is connected to Wi-Fi or cellular.

Your phone needs to be connected to the internet also. Best is to leave it’s charged at home and not turned off (screen off is ok).

I never turn it off. Just leave it until it turns off the screen and locks.

I have similar experience. Some days messages come thru to watch when I’m out running and other times do not. So frustrating.

Are you talking about not receiving either SMS/MMS (Green messages) & iMessages (Blue messages) on your Apple watch when you are out of range of a Bluetooth or Wifi connection and is connected via Cellular with at least 1 Bar.

If it has never worked for either type of message(s) then your Apple watch's line is not properly setup with Verizon. If it works sometimes then it is a connectivity issue. Tell us more about your experience and we can narrow down the problem.

Well I have a weekly poker game and we set it up with a group text. I did not get all the replies till I got back to the house. Not sure if everyone on the group has iPhones - don't think so, so that could be the issue.
But today, I tried to send a text to my wife's iPhone. The first two times - even though I got 2 dots on the cellular signal - I got "No Siri Connection". I then reset the watch - very annoying to have to do in the middle of a run - and then Siri "sent" the text twice - till I got messages that the text did not send. But - I was able to call my wife's iPhone from the Watch. So go figure what the heck is going on.
