I haven't seen any updates in the app store. The last one (years ago) showed up there. What I read online suggests my machine should be compatible. It is a 13-inch Mid-2012 MacBook Pro. Model identifier: MacBookPro9,2 I currently have macOS High Sierra installed. Version 10.13.6. Any idea why it has never come up as an update option?

Your 2012 MBPro can upgrade to Catalina, next generation beyond Mojave

Maybe you might have all your automatic updates turned off.
Try a manual update scan in a different way:
Apple menu/About This Mac. Click on the Software Update button.
That should launch your App Store/Update tab. Do any updates show up?

But, you can always upgrade to Mojave by downloading the Mojave installer app, making an external installer from that app. Boot to your new installer, and upgrade to Mojave. Works good!

Today I upgraded my MacBookPro9,2 with 2X8GB ELPIDA PC3-12800S RAM modules and already had SSD installed.
I advise you to do the same if you haven't already done so. It will definitely help you to run Mojave or Catalina.

P.S. It is possible that your file system must be APFS in order to see the updates.

OP:

That's a NON-retina MacBook Pro, correct?

IF you still have the original drive inside, the BETTER UPGRADE is to get an SSD and replace the platter-based HDD inside (if you haven't already done so).

This will SPEED UP things greatly, and you'll be VERY pleased with the outcome.

It's so easy to do, that ANYONE can do it. All you need is a Phillips #00 driver and a Torx T-6 driver. The hardest part is removing all the screws that hold the back cover on, and putting them back in later.

If you want to do this, reply back and we'll give more details.

Yes, SSD seems to be a better overall upgrade than RAM. I could have stayed with 4GB of RAM as the system still swaps to the drive.

Your swap with 16GB is tiny, compared to what it would be with 4GB.
I think that is not caused by insufficient RAM, but more likely the design of the software (configuration triggers swap, without immediate need for RAM)

True to a point. My average swap with 4GB of RAM was only 200Mb. I guess there is a lot of truth to a "unused RAM is a wasted RAM".

Thanks all for your responses. Sorry it took so long, I had notifications turned off! I actually upgraded my hard drive to 1 TB SSD and 16 GB RAM right out of the box. I bought it brand new in 2016. I wanted the CD Rom and all the ports.

Anyway.. I am going to try Mojave first. If that works out I may go to Catalina later. But Mojave’s sounds sufficient. I really just want dark mode
